Civil War of 1812: A Sackets Harbor Perspective

In this first-year observance of the War of 1812 Bicentennial, the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site will host noted author and historian Alan Taylor. In a presentation of his current work, The Civil War of 1812: American Citizens, British Subjects, Irish Rebels &amp- Indian Allies, Taylor will offer his perspective on Sackets Harbor’s role in the War of 1812 as it evolved along the northern frontier.

Alan Taylor is the author of six books, including Liberty Men and Great Proprietors: The Revolutionary Settlement on the Maine Frontier- The Divided Ground: Indians, Settlers, and the Northern Borderland of the American Revolution- and William Cooper’s Town: Power and Persuasion on the Frontier of the Early Republic for which he was awarded both a Pulitzer Prize in History and the Bancroft Prize.

The event will be held on Friday, August 3, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at the Battlefield.  Copies of Taylor’s book will be available for purchase during the book-signing event at 5:00 p.m. The program is free and open to the public.

This program is sponsored by the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site through a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities, matched by the Battlefield Alliance, Inc. and Village of Sackets Harbor. Additional support comes from the Sackets Harbor Historical Society and Town of Hounsfield.

Dinner with Alan Taylor:

Following the program, the Sackets Harbor Historical Society will host a War of 1812 Bicentennial Dinner with Alan Taylor at 7:00 p.m. The cash-bar social hour and dinner will be at DeVito’s in Historic Madison Barracks. Prepaid reservations are required for this limited-seating event, at $30 per person, includes three courses and dessert.
